Wireless security - D-Link

Securing your network

The D-Link wireless routers we provide are compatible with WEP and WPA wireless encryption, however this feature is turned OFF by default. Please make sure that your wireless adapter is compatible with WEP or WPA encryption before securing your network.

Enabling WPA encryption

WPA, WPA2, WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK

WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) is the next generation of security for wireless networks. WPA-PSK is the version of WPA specific for the home or small office users because it does not require an authentication server. With WPA-PSK, your network key is regularly and automatically changed so hackers cannot decode the key by listening to your connection.

Select WPA-PSK if:

  • Your wireless adapter support WPA. Check your wireless adapter's specification.
  • You wish to benefit from the additional security offered by WPA over standard WEP.

To setup WEP or WPA security on the D-Link router:

  • Open your Internet browser and type http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar to open the configuration manager.
  • Select the Wireless Tab.
  • Set Security to either WEP or WPA.

If you select WEP you will need to enter your encryption key. If you select WPA you have two other options:

  • PSK Hex - wireless key/password can only contain digits 0-9 and letters A-F.
  • PSK String - you can use any normal keyboard characters to create the key/password.

With WPA encryption your security key should be between 8 - 64 characters long.

Once the wireless key for WEP or WPA security has been setup, click on the Apply Button, click Tools, select System and then click Save and Reboot.
