Creating an alias email address using message rules - Outlook Express

Creating an alias email address using message rules - Outlook Express

An email alias is simply another name for your existing mail account. It is a simple way to use extra email addresses without the hassle of setting up extra accounts. By using an alias, you can give out another address to (for example) a family member and have any emails sent to the address arrive in your existing mailbox.

If your email address is simpsons@madasafish.com you could also use addresses in this format:

Any mail sent to these addresses will go to your existing mailbox. You won't need to perform any additional setup or inform us. anythingyoulike@simpsons.madasafish.com will work as long as you use the format shown here.

If you wish to keep email, sent to one of the alias addresses, separate from your other email, you can create a "Message Rule" that automatically files messages for the alias address in the new folder.

Setting up the Message Rules

  1. Click on Tools
  2. Click on Message Rules then Mail
  3. The Message Rules box will then appear. Make sure you are on the Mail Rule tab.
  4. Click on New, and another box will appear to say to select condition and actions.
  5. No.1. Select conditions of Rule:  Put a tick in "where the To line contains people"
  6. No.2. Select Action for your Rule:  Put a tick in "move it to the specific folder"
  7. No.3. Rule Description, click once on the word "contains people"
  8. In the space where it says Type one Name at a time and click Add, or select people from the Address Book, type in your Alias email address (for example lisa@simpsons.madasafish.com). Click on the Add button and then click OK.
  9. You should be back at the New Mail Rule window. Click on the word specified.
  10. Click on New Folder and enter a suitable name for the folder that this email will be delivered to (for example "Lisa"). Click on OK and then OK again to close the window. You should now be back at the Outlook Express main window.

On the left hand side you should see the folder with the name you created. All the emails sent to the new alias will now go into this folder.

You can repeat these steps to create as many rules and folders as you like.
